The Essence of You
There are so many things that are at the brink of collapsing here at the end of 2020, including democracy itself.
If the outcomes of life on earth were simply up to the human beings who reside here, the world would truly be on an inevitable slide into non-existence because we are much better at the process of destruction than we are at the process of creation. So many people feel confused and disempowered as to what to do to create improvement and change.
But if you are capable of seeing through the appearance of events, what you see is the birth and expansion of a new way of living.
The invisible forces of the vertical, of consciousness, are moving forward in their agenda of the evolutionary process, using the division of groups and religions and governments and individuals as the very mechanisms needed for creating tomorrow. And as I have consistently stated throughout all of my work, the creative process is dependent upon individual transformation. So, I’d like to go over some ideas and concepts that reacted to that and how you, as an individual, can continue to grow and consciously evolve.
I cannot express strongly enough that the first step toward addressing the insanity of the world is to address the insanity that lies inside of you.
If you make the mistake of trying to do battle with life without the pursuit of seeking the greater realization of who you are first but cling to the ego as the source of who you are, you will be deeply disappointed in the outcomes…and in some cases, feeling absolutely destroyed, disheartened and resigned. Under these circumstances, victims become persecutors, rescuers become victims.
This inner work, of course, never ends. But it begins with acknowledging that the physical substance of which you are made contains a spiritual source, making you a spiritual being having a physical experience whose destiny and purpose are unknown to you. The problem with trying to define the make-up of this source is the fact that the source, the absolute, the immutable spirit from which you come is undefinable. You can say it’s this but then, what about that? You can say it’s that, but then, what about this? You may not know what it is but you can absolutely experience it and I promise you that you have. You know there is something more, you know there is a reality far grander than you are living. These experiences that you have had are not understood by the reasoning and analytical mind but by your intuition.
This is why the things I am talking about in these messages are not grasped so easily by the mind by everything in you tells you that you are more than what your mind, body, and emotions tell you you are. This intuition, this reality, is the very essence of consciousness and this is why it’s so important for the mind to be trained out of the micrologic and into the macro logic of the infinite, of the spiritual, of the vertical.
When you demand that empirical proof be provided to you in order to substantiate that there is something more, then that something more is lost to you. But becoming aware of that greater reality, while the first steps are associated with knowing it, is only the beginning and must move from knowing to experiencing to expressing. True knowledge, truth, is not static and the more you learn, the more you see.
But in the beginning steps, it can be helpful to understand that reality doesn’t just exist, it is existence itself, completely aware of itself, residing in joy and the bliss of being.
Individuals in the American culture are trained to see God in a very personal way but there is also a vast impersonal side to the spiritual reality. We’ll talk about that in another message but it is a very important understanding.
This concept, this confirmation of a spiritual reality, reveals a monumentally important physical reality. And that is the omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent reality that exists in every aspect of the physical world in which you live and that includes everyone. In fact, there is nothing that is not that reality. Every event, every experience is the unfolding of that spiritual reality in the physical world. Do you understand? For every relative position, you take, right or left, right or wrong, each is but the omnipresent reality. So, understood properly, you can’t go wrong! But you can sure do a lot of suffering in the meantime learning the difference between the relative and the absolute.
The eyes see the horizontal, physical.
The heart sees the spiritual, vertical.
But…and this is important…that spiritual unfolding in the physical is not dependent upon the physical but the physical is dependent upon the spiritual…not the spiritual that you think it is, not the spiritual that you have been taught, but the spiritual that it is.
In other words, the finite is dependent upon the infinite but the infinite is not dependent upon the finite. Any finite system that is absent or void of its connection to the infinite is a system that will predictably fail. You may have your own version of the truth but when compared to the truth of the infinite, you’re not going to like the outcomes.
With this reference point…the spiritual infinite…the macro logic…your micrologic is the basis of illusion. This is why your intuition is a better guide than your mind. To give you a perfect but perhaps uncomfortable example, your enlightenment would not be realized once you overcame depression, for example, but would be based upon your experience that depression never existed in the first place…but it felt like. And those are two different realities. What is a miracle to your mind, the horizontal, is but the standard operating procedure to the spiritual reality, the vertical.
This work, this movement from the horizontal to the vertical that I am advocating is not about understanding the vast complexities of the infinite but is about making sense and understanding the purpose of your physical life. Your mind is the instrument of ignorance and illusion. Your Self is the instrument of Truth. Now, people say you have to choose, that you can’t serve two masters. But in the beginning stages which I figure most of us are in, it’s obvious that that is not true. It’s obvious that you do live in two worlds and consequently, practice two forms of yourself…the self you present to the outer world and the self that lies the mask.
The outcomes that you seek that are at first only possibilities become potentials and those potentials become actualizations or realizations…at least that’s what you hope they do…and that’s what they are designed to do! But no one has taught you about the science of that process because the science of that process lies not in a step-by-step linear, sensory formula but lies in the universal, invisible, non-linear world of the vertical, of the infinite.
But just because you don’t know what it is, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. What is unknown to you and your mind about how to live your life, about bringing possibilities into realities, is self-evident to the divine, to the infinite. But remember, you are that infinite! So, it’s like a game of cat-and-mice.
However, as I said earlier, the first step toward addressing the insanity of the world is to address the insanity that lies inside of you. And that usually begins with addressing the visible, physical, behavioral aspects of your life. Medication is the primary, physical resource to address mental and emotional pain and suffering the horizontal. Truth is the primary resource of the vertical to address mental and emotional pain and suffering in the horizontal, not medication. Mediation can be extremely helpful in addressing mental, physical, and emotional barriers but medication only treats the symptom and not the cause. The symptom tends to be physical and visible. The cause is always spiritual and invisible. So, here are the two worlds again in which you live.
Over the last 30 years, there has been significant progress made in understanding the horizontal, linear, mental, physical, and emotional being. And although I don’t speak very often about this, beginning to stabilize at least to some degree these aspects of your being is vital. I can say with a great deal of certainty that the reason it took me so long to accomplish this was because I had only an awareness of the triangle…mind, body, emotions…which I illustrate by putting both index fingers together and putting both thumbs together to form a triangle. I had no awareness of the spiritual quadrant…the triangle turns into a square by opening up the two index fingers. Without the spiritual quadrant, the journey through mind, body, and emotion was the circling tracks of the mind and the formation of what I call the closed tape loop. Not only do you not find what you’re looking for, but it eventually begins to repeat itself. That’s the closed tape loop.
The word plasticity is used in this film and certainly, when it comes to consciousness, a great deal of plasticity is applied to teaching your mind, for example, to unify its perceptual fields in order to see the divine, the absolute, the vertical in everything it sees…because that’s what is really going on. To see only the part…which is the same thing as going to therapy and discussing your marital woes…without its connection to a greater being, to the true Self, can lead to a greater understanding of the part but not the whole.
But the inverse is true, too. If you concentrate only on the whole and dismiss the parts, this can only lead to a partial understanding. This is why I advocate embracing the horizontal and the vertical, the physical and the spiritual, for they are the two worlds in which you live and both deserve your attention and study.
The horizontal is the multiplicity that resides within the vertical that is the one. So, the variability in which the vertical operates within the horizontal is infinite. This is the true meaning of diversity. Not the diversity of the mind that fragments and divides and sees race and color and gender but the diversity of the infinite itself, expressing itself in an incalculable number of ways.
So, this is why you’re spitting in the wind to insist on the uniformity within the horizontal. It’s not going to happen because it was never meant to happen. You must train your mind to see and seek plasticity within that variety, harmony within that diversity, and unity within that division. That’s a lifetime of work right there.
Chapter 13 of the Bhagavad Gita, The Yoga of Discriminating the Field and the Knower of the Field, states, “It stands undivided in beings and yet as if divided.” Translated into modern terms and the language I like to use, it means the vertical is what makes up the horizontal. You are made of the essence of the universe itself, including the ones you don’t like.
Life in a human body that seeks survival in the horizontal, physical world results in perceptions and conceptions that are based on limitation and ignorance. But the essence remains the same.
If you look at your life and add all of the crud, mistakes, drama, regrets, shames, rages, etc., you still have the vertical. If you remove all of the same things, you still have the vertical…why? Because that’s all there is. So, perhaps in this way you can see that you are not now nor have you ever been nor will you ever be separated from the Divine because you are the Divine!...pretending you’re not, taking lifetime after lifetime to wake up and realize your true Self that is the expression of the vertical Divine within the horizontal, physical. This understanding is the process that all men and women share because we are all one another…each differently going about their lives and evolutionary process.
But look carefully at the benefits in your horizontal from this vertical truth, the vertical truth that we as a species are an unbalanced equilibrium, a diversified unity. What happens when you begin to see the essence all around you? You experience a greater level of peace although there will be moments that are heartbreaking, a deeper level of relaxation although there will be times when the tension will grow and the fear will express itself, a penetrating sense of certainty that replaces faith knowing that all that is happening is a destined unfolding and yet there will be times when you will experience confusion and pain.
To see the true essence is to see the wonder that you are, to love the being that you are because until you learn to love you, you cannot love another and you will experience the illusion of loneliness and separation. To see the true essence is to see your ever-expanding world in which you live, to wake up each morning allowing yourself to be more, to have more, to experience more because until you do, you will experience the illusion of jealously and limitation and scarcity.
To see the true essence of your beautiful self is to see the courage you possess to embrace everything that happens to you, every failure, knowing that that event is perfect for your growth and development because unless you do, you will experience the illusion of rage and blame and projection of your negativity onto others and remain the same. To see the true essence of the vertical that resides within you that is you is to see the absolute certainty of your life working out and stepping into the unknown, even death itself, knowing the perfection that is part of the process even if your mind doesn’t understand it because unless you do, you will know the illusion of paralyzing fear and worry and anxiety.
To see the essence of the divine that is you is to see that in surrendering and letting go, you teach your mind to be a servant of that grand truth that everything that happens in your life is meaningful and purposeful, to learn to accept what happens and to give up resistance and opposition because until you do, you will know and experience the illusion of depression and loss and unrelenting grief.
To see the essence of your beautiful Self is to see the essence of the Divine that is you. And all the time spent in unconsciousness, trapped in the fixed tape loops of your mind was just a dream and now, it is time to move away from the dream and into reality.
The ability to see the essence of reality that resides within you, that is you, is perhaps the highest level of work in which any individual can engage because until the individual transforms, the world cannot transform.
All movement, all events, all exchange, is this movement between the horizontal and the vertical whose destiny is for the vertical to become realized on planet Earth…not to be spoken about in churches by priests who have not spiritualized their own lives, philosophized by spiritual masters who have not learned the very things they teach, intellectualized by university professors who do not have the courage to seek the lived experience of their thinking but experienced and captured by the individual as a way of life, a way of being, an evolutionary purpose and a destiny to be lived out in daily life in the horizontal, physical world, transforming the world into heaven on earth. But this is predicated upon the individual, upon you. I know this may sound strange…but it’s true…you are the plan.
While you reside in these two worlds, the horizontal and the vertical, you become aware of your petty self, the one who gets upset because your grilled cheese sandwich isn’t hot enough, the petty self who is constantly seeking recognition, and you know the one I’m talking about. And what I’m saying about your petty, unconscious, miserable self is to be compassionate, to love him, to love her into submission for he, she, did the best they could with the information they had but that now, it’s time to move on, following the scent of the essence of a grander life in which your mind rises above the addictive personality traits and moves into the essence of its true being…one inch at a time, one forgiveness at a time, one minute at a time.
It’s OK. You’ve done the best you could.
The object now is to take the essence of the truth of who you are from the vertical and journey into the horizontal, transforming one thought at a time, one sensation at a time, one emotion at a time.
Now, to be a bit more instructional here, the Self, meaning you, exists at transcendent, cosmic, and individual levels but you can’t parachute into the transcendent without first having taken care of the lower levels of your Self and this is our work here at TruthSpring, helping you create bridges from the lower levels to the higher levels. You can’t plant a garden until you till the soil up. The dirt, the foundation, is the most important part of the garden. The same is true for you for the foundation dictates the height to which you can ascend. Of course, you are going to do that no matter what in one lifetime but why delay?
The essence of your true Self is the true freedom of which all great masters have spoken. It is not only essential but precisely the movement that begins in the horizontal, physical life to the vertical, spiritual life, and then back to the horizontal, physical. In psychological terms, it is the taming of the ego, the loss of the personality, the saying goodbye to the petty self, and the saying hello to the true Self, the essence of who you are.
Existence has no justification unless there is one who exists.
Joy has no reality unless there is one who is enjoying it.
Knowledge has no place in life unless there is a knower.
And you know what’s I’m going to say…that’s who you are. You are simultaneously existence existing, joy enjoying, and knowledge knowing. How about them apples?!
In the meantime, you struggle but it is time for that struggle to morph from struggling into discovering and learning about the essence of your beautiful, true, eternal, unthreatenable, conscious Self.
